John A. Silver Penn School Spirituals - St. Helena Island, 1942

Audiocassette copy of a disc recording of Sea Island spirituals recorded in 1942 at the Penn School, St. Helena Island, South Carolina by John A. Silver, a trustee of the school then known as the Penn Normal Industrial & Agricultural School at Frogmore on St. Helena Island. Includes a spoken prologue, and was used in the production of the 1942 film "To Live As Free Men" produced by John A. Silver. Collection includes a letter from John A. Silver (1982) describing the recording and film. The performers were a quartet modeled after the Hampton Singers, including Hampton graduates, with various teachers and some students of the Penn School.
