In the Classroom
Our project will develop three educational programming packets for the K-12 audience. South Carolina incorporates modules around Gullah Geechee cultures and history for grades 3 and 8. The Coastal Carolina Univeristy Team is developing educational modules that utilize the immersive experiences to strengthen students’ understanding of South Carolina rice production, slavery, spiritual music, and West African ties to Gullah Geechee culture. Each packet will draw from our Johns Island, St. Helena Island, Plantersville, Murrells Inlet, and Sandy Island collections to construct three main themes with unit/lesson plans and follow-up assessments.
