Voice of an Island Field Work 2012-2014

The Athenaeum Press’ first project on Gullah culture resulted in its CD project, Gullah: Voice of an Island (2014) 60 minutes of music, harmonies, languages, and Negro spirituals that remained unchanged for the hundreds of years. The preservation of these songs retain many of the West African rhythms and traditions. Even popular spirituals, like Michael Row the Boat Ashore, are performed differently on St. Helena Island than elsewhere. The materials gathered for this project include oral histories and praise service recordings that echo the historic recordings in the Library of Congress holdings.
